From Goat Herding to Lion Conservation: the Story of a Samburu Warrior

"Lions are my life." Jeneria Lekilelei, the young Samburu warrior who leads our field programs, shares his favorite lion experiences. He explains how he went from hating lions to loving them, why they matter for his Samburu people, and how Ewaso Lions is ensuring a future for lions in Kenya. When our favorite lioness, Nashipai, went missing in September, we feared the worst. The aging lioness started attacking livestock frequently, so we thought she may have been killed in retaliation. But she lived! We got reports from our Lion Watch guides that she had been seen, and we later confirmed she is alive and well. Nashipai is such a well-known lion in Samburu that the Huffington Post even wrote about her – and our 12 year history together.
