No 383 Wildlife Trade News: 14th April

Another daily dose of bad news …
Poaching, Wildlife Crimes, Environmental Crimes …
It just does not seem to get better …

in the spotlight today ……………………

Hong Kong government ‘aiding and abetting’ illegal ivory trade, 50 wildlife groups say. (NA comment: Definitely a headline you will never see on the CITES web site or Facebook page, even though this was published in China. Does this mean the CITES Secretariat apply more censorship than even the Chinese media and government?)

CITES ISN’T BEING MADE TO WORK. WHY?

WHAT WOULD THE FOUNDING ‘FATHERS’ OF THE CONVENTION THINK ABOUT TODAY’S LACK OF ENFORCEMENT ACTION?

Experts mull strategies to curb wildlife trafficking in Kenya. (NA comment: Oh no, surely not another meeting attended by ‘experts’. Does this look to you like a case of ‘paralysis from too much analysis’ – or is it just more BS dressed up as ‘feel good’ $$$$$$ conservation ? Seems to us the real experts are those on the frontline, like the underpaid forest guards and rangers; they know the causes, effect and the remedies needed for the problems….without ever needing to attend a meeting.) http://www.globalpost.com/article/6515629/2015/04/14/experts-mull-strategies-curb-wildlife-trafficking-kenya

Africa: UN Conference Stresses Grave Need to Combat Wildlife Crime. (NA comment: If we rely on the UN or CITES to save what wildlife is left, you probably know what the outcome will be….besides more meetings. Just look at what they have permitted to happen so far.) http://allafrica.com/stories/201504141081.html

Malaysian mammals face extinction. (NA COMMENT: We’re not surprised given the absence of law enforcement for so long in that country, despite constant pressure from Nature Alert and others. It would be impossible to exaggerate how useless PERHILITAN & NRE -Malaysia’s wildlife authorities and CITES MA – have been and remain. They behave as if there is no law to enforce, when in fact the laws are good but their enforcement pathetic. And yes, these officials do read this newsletter. Having breached the CITES convention more times than we can remember, it’s hardly surprising Malaysia doesn’t care about wildlife – theirs or anyone else’s. i.e. If CITES enforcement is absent – and it is, why would Malaysia or any country worry? We can see the upside, but where is the downside for any country breaking the CITES convention?) http://www.thejakartapost.com/news/2015/04/14/malaysian-mammals-face-extinction.html

CURRENTLY IN PURGATORY AND WAITING

TO BE SENT TO HELL.

ALL THANKS TO CHINA. IT’S SO WRONG, ISN’T IT?

…CONSIGNING THEM TO A LIFE OF CRUELTY AND ABUSE IN CHINA.

CITES OFFICIALS CAN EASILY STOP THIS TRADE. IF THEY HAD AN OUNCE OF CONCERN FOR ELEPHANTS, THEY WOULD BLOCK THE SHIPMENT, WOULDN’T THEY?

YES – CITES OFFICIALS – ONCE AGAIN AT THE FOREFRONT OF EXPANDING THE

CRUEL WILDLIFE TRADE.

SHAME ON CHINA AND ZIMBABWE.

Will YOU please write and tell this man to block the trade in baby elephants, today, while it is still fresh in your mind? It’s the least YOU can do, isn’t it?
