Another dose of bad news about
poaching, wildlife and environmental crimes …

in the spotlight today ……………………

Poachers kill 93 African elephants a day as slaughter figures reach record high. The bad news comes only one year after 46 countries signed the London declaration on illegal wildlife trade. http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/africa/poachers-kill-93-african-elephants-a-day-as-slaughter-figures-reach-record-high-10339836.html (NA comment: Despite countless conferences (talking shops) the massacre of elephants continues. And, despite everyone not living on the moon knowing full well China, the USA, Vietnam especially, are some of the worst offenders and have been for a decade or more, CITES is so weak as to be little more than a piece of worthless paper because so many CITES officials do not have the guts to punish these countries, do they? The Secretariat doesn’t even permit negative reports of China’s complicity in the illegal wildlife trade. WHY? Does the Secretariat have the legal right to favour CHINA by censoring such articles while publishing articles critical of other CITES member countries?

Officials on big salaries and expense accounts travelling the world in business class, staying in 5* hotels, achieving nothing. If they worked for a company they would have been fired long ago, wouldn’t they? Sickening, isn’t it?)

INDONESIA’S WILDLIFE: WATCH IT DISAPPEAR BEFORE YOUR OWN EYES.

SUMATRA: A wildlife seller at Jalan Metrologi Ujung, Medan. Usually he sells White-breasted waterhen (Amaurornis phoenicurus) but recently it is more and more difficult to find this bird in Medan and its surrounding area. Currently he tries to catch other bird species such as Watercock (Gallicrex cinerea), Ruddy-breasted crake (Porzana fusca), and another bird species looks like Water rail (Rallus aquaticus). Price IDR 20,000 (US$1.50).

All these species are disappearing fast from the Medan area. As usual, we have already reported all this to the Indonesian authorities and at the highest levels.

This beautiful though terrified bird will have been cooked within hours.

Oil Palm Company Accused of Violating RSPO, IPOP Standards in Indonesia extract: The reputation of oil palm business group Sawit Sumbermas Sarana (SSS), a holding of one of Indonesia’s richest men, has in recent days taken hits on multiple fronts, with a pair of NGOs separately accusing the firm of violating various sustainability commitments it is party to.

The criticism highlights holes in both the Indonesia Palm Oil Pledge (IPOP), a high-profile sustainability pact to which palm giants Wilmar, Golden Agri-Resources (GAR), Musim Mas, Asian Agri and Cargill as well as the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce (Kadin) are signatories, and the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), an eco-certification initiative that requires companies to abide by certain social and environmental criteria when opening up new lands for plantations.
