#OlPejeta named as double Eco Warrior in 2017 award gala night

#ECOWARRIORAWARD2017 CEREMONY RECOGNIZES THOSE WITH SUSTAINABLE POLICIES AND ACTION

Last evening did Kenya’s tourism industry celebrate both World Tourism Day and the annual Eco Warrior Awards in a sold out gala night at the Radisson Blue Hotel in Nairobi.
The event saw Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Tourism Hon. Najib Balala deliver the keynote address to the who is who of Kenya’s tourism industry who came together to find out whom the panel of judges found worthy to take one of the coveted trophies home and be rewarded for the exceptional work in their field it took to get to the top of their profession and businesses.

Among the winners were Serena Hotels (www.serenahotels.com) through the Mombasa Serena Beach Resort & Spa’s turtle hatching initiative but also the El Karama Lodge in Laikipia.

Let’s Go Travel too was among the winners again claiming the award for providing quality education.

The Ol Pejeta Conservancy (www.olpejetaconservancy.org) took home two awards in both of their nominated categories and also emerged as overall Eco Warrior 2017, making it three trophies for the night.

The Eco-Warrior Award scheme is an Eco Tourism Kenya initiative that recognizes and celebrates outstanding contributions to ecotourism practice in Kenya. It is aimed at motivating winning ventures/operations and industry at large to embrace practices that are ecologically and ethically sustainable in order to compete with the best in the world.

Becoming an Eco Warrior means that the following criteria have been met by the respective award winners:

  • Positively working towards being sustainable through having policies, investing in policies, compliance with legislation, partnerships, documenting, sharing and innovation.
  • Working constructively with communities to minimize negative social impacts of tourism.
  • Working with communities to optimize opportunities provided by tourism
  • Commitment to best practices in energy, water and waste management.
