Protea widens presence in Rwanda with new resort deal

PROTEA IN LOCAL PARTNERSHIP TO BUILD NEW RESORT ON LAKE KIVU SHORES

(Posted 03rd October 2014)

Protea Hotels East Africa Managing Director Stuart Cook put pen to paper last week to sign a partnership agreement and hotel development deal with the Diocese of Rusizi and the 7 districts which make up the Western Province of Rwanda. They will be joint shareholders in a new resort on the shores of Lake Kivu which will be known as the Protea Kivu Marina Resort.

The 22+ million US Dollar project is expected to be completed in 2016 and will then offer 76 suites and rooms and a range of leisure facilities to attract more international guests to this scenic part of Rwanda.

Protea Hotels, Africa’s largest hotel group, is since earlier this year part of Marriott Hotels International, a group which is in the final stages to open their Marriott Kigali Hotel in the heart of the Rwandan capital and the new resort will give the group a wider presence as one Protea Hotel is already under development in Kigali.

Rusizi is connected with the capital Kigali by air with daily flights by RwandAir to Kamembe, an airport which will from November onwards see the runway extended to cater for larger aircraft. Starting point to the Congo-Nile Trail and springboard to the Nyungwe Forest National Park is Kamembe, aka Cyangugu, at the heart of an area with much to explore. The new resort, when open, will be an ideal base to sail the lake, hike across some of the islands and visit the scenic surroundings of the area with Nyungwe’s primates just an hour’s drive away from the airport.
