Reunion in the news as kite surfer attempts to cross from Mauritius to Reunion

100.000 MORE FACEBOOK ‘LIKES’ ATTEST TO REUNION’S GROWING POPULARITY

(Posted 10th July 2014)

Tourism Reunion’ officials expressed their delight when the ‘likes’ for their Facebook page reached 300.000 earlier in the week, an addition of over 100.000 since late 2013. The sharply risen popularity is attributed to the relentless marketing of the island’s attractions not just in France itself but also in new and emerging markets. Added content, more pictures, proactive engagement with contributors, regular fam trips for the travel trade and media and not the least the membership in the Vanilla Island organization, where Reunion is a founder member and presently holds the presidency of the 7 island grouping, are seen as key reasons for the surge in popularity. Meanwhile is an attempt going underway this Saturday to cross the distance between Mauritius and Reunion by means of kite surfing, with champion kite surfer Sophie Bernier trying to navigate the 174 kilometres from Morne in Mauritius to the Reunion port of Saint Rose. It is estimated, given the prevailing winds, that Sophie, who is also the current Vice World Champion in Sky Diving, will take at least 7 hours to cover the distance. A support team will accompany Sophie by boat to make sure that she is safe while of course the task is hers entirely to accomplish.

If successful will Sophie be the first female athlete to cover the distance between the two Vanilla Islands by kite surfing, though in 2010 Sebastian Coupy was first in reaching this goal in 7 hours and 14 minutes.
