Ecotourism Kenya has, following an extensive audit, awarded the Lake Elementaita Serena Camp the coveted Gold Standard, the second such honour for Serena Hotels after their Sweetwaters Safari Camp on Ol Pejeta was certified some time ago.

There are only 18 Gold Standard properties across Kenya certified by Ecotourism Kenya, a sign how stringent the process is to audit and ascertain that there is no ‘greenwashing’ going on.

Serena Hotels has for some time now pioneered and implemented a series of measures to reduce the group’s carbon footprint and introduce sustainable management practices across their 24 properties across the Eastern African region, often setting trends then followed by the entire industry, when cost savings become evident for others to see. Areas of key importance under this scheme are optimized resource and waste management, improved health and safety measures and coordinated community relations as part of the company’s corporate social responsibility programmes which have been put in place for each of the 24 hotels, resorts and safari lodges / camps.
