SEYCHELLES SIGNS NEW BILATERAL AIR SERVICES AGREEMENTS AT NAIROBI AVIATION MEETING

Poland and Luxembourg from Europe, Colombia, Chile from South America, the Dominican Republic from the Caribbean and Mali, Mozambique and Ghana from Africa are the countries the Seychelles concluded new or first time Bilateral Air Services Agreements with during the just concluded ICAN conference in Nairobi. These agreements are now subject to ratification by first the Cabinet of Ministers and then the Seychelles’ National Assembly, where the agreements are expected to be tabled in due course.
The Seychelles delegation also reportedly signed renewed BASA’s with several other countries, among them Kenya and Rwanda from Africa, Switzerland, Greece, Turkey but also the Bahamas and Jamaica as well as Saudi Arabia.
This ICAO organized aviation meeting has become a regular platform for member states to meet and hold bilateral and multilateral discussions and negotiations with the aim to create legal frameworks among states to regulate air traffic between them.
As an island nation, overwhelmingly dependent on tourism, is it crucial for the archipelago to encourage air traffic and with the national airline Air Seychelles more recently heavily downsized into a regional Indian Ocean airline is it all the more important that the framework is being created for foreign airlines to start flying to or continue to fly to the Seychelles.
The Seychelles delegation was for the last time headed by the SCAA CEO Gilbert Faure, who is due to retire at the end of the year.
