A GREEN HOTEL HOSTS THE GREEN SUMMIT THIS YEAR

(Posted 13th June 2017)

Judy Kepher-Gona, the CEO of the Sustainable Travel and Tourism Agenda in Nairobi / Kenya kicked off the proceedings for the 3rd Green Tourism Summit for Africa earlier this morning, introducing the event sponsors, which includes one of Nairobi’s greenest hotels, the Park Inn Westlands besides AFEW, BR!GHT, Fairview Coffee, Netfund and Uniglobe Let’s Go Travel.
Nairobi county government tourism executive Anna Othoro then delivered the key note address before declaring the summit officially open.
Promptly after that did the first panel session kick off, comprised of key sponsor representatives, discussing tourism in and around Nairobi and how to return the city to the Green City in the Sun of former days.
The Green Summit, now in its third year, was described by Judy as a multi sectoral, multi stakeholder platform for learning and sharing knowledge on green and sustainable trends in tourism as well as global developments that will impact on the industry.
The objective was described to educate, challenge and prepare the tourism industry to be sustainable and inclusive because the future of tourism globally will be driven by sustainability consciousness.
The theme this year is ‘Tourism and the SDG’s – Opportunities or Challenges
Selected speakers, some coming from as far as Cape Town in South Africa, will look at the application of SDG’s in resource use, policy making, challenges that may emerge for tourism’s performance of destinations and explore future opportunities.
Equally will the role and use of digital media serving the goals of the sustainability agenda be explored by speakers, panelists and the attendees.
This third summit is therefore relevant for tourism businesses, policy makers, DMC’s, researchers, the academia, students, NGO’s, trade and industry associations, financial institutions, institutions of higher learning, consultants, green suppliers and influencers, sustainability and green champions but also, last but not the least, the media.
