CYCLING IN KAMPALA – THE NEW IN THING
(Posted 23rd February 2015)
Cycling enthusiasts visiting Kampala now finally have the option to get out of the city and take in the landscapes by participating in an organized mountain bike tour from the Yellow Haven, which is just twelve kilometres from the CBD at the shores of Lake Victoria in Kawuku, off Gaba Road.
The small inn on the lake, with only 8 rooms, is intimate and away from the hustle and bustle of the city but still near enough to comfortably make it for business appointments if staying there, or else leave the city behind and come out to the lake for a meal in a very tranquil atmosphere, lake view included of course.
The Yellow Haven, only a stone throw away from this correspondent’s own lakeside residence, is the jump off point for Kampala’s latest rave, a combined lake and cycling tour covering some 34.58 kilometres. Participants set out from the inn’s own little landing point and cross Murchisons’ Bay with a lake boat, bikes on board of course. At the other side of the bay does the guided tour then take the cyclists through villages and small farms in a wide circle back to the lake before for the boat ride back to the base. The trip, which takes 3 to 5 hours, depending on fitness and the number of stops participants make to take pictures, gives a unique insight into life in villages. Some of those can only be reached by foot or by bike, an experience few others will be able to take home with them and brag about like ‘I rode a mountain bike through rural Uganda’.
