Tanzania Airport Authority plays host to 3rd Africa Airport Expansion Summit

3RD AFRICA AIRPORT EXPANSION SUMMIT IS UNDERWAY IN DAR ES SALAAM

(Posted 20th February 2015)

The Dar es Salaam Serena Hotel is the venue for the 03rd Annual Africa Airport Expansion Summit, which is taking place at the moment. The meeting brought together a range of participants from a wide cross section of government officials, construction companies, airlines, airport authorities and operators who will meet with aviation consultants, architects, equipment providers and service groups, in order to better explore the market and support project development.

Tanzania was chosen as the venue this year as the country has embarked on major aviation infrastructure projects across the country. Dar es Salaam’s Julius Nyerere International Airport has a completely new terminal under construction, Kilimanjaro International near Arusha is undergoing modernization and expansion, work at Mwanza’s airport is ongoing and will see a new terminal building and an expanded runway offer better services to passengers and airlines alike when ready.

Elsewhere was Bukoba Airport expanded and last year the new Songwe Airport near Mbeya was commissioned opening the way for daily flights by Fastjet with Airbus A319 aircraft. Mtwara, Tanzania’s gas capital, will also see major works commence soon to expand the airport and a number of other secondary and tertiary airports and aerodromes have been earmarked for expansion. This constitutes one of Africa’s largest public investment programmes in aviation infrastructure, giving delegates to the conference plenty of case studies to look at and draw lessons from.

In the wider Eastern African region is Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport a prime example of a massive expansion of capacity with the opening last year of the new Terminal 1A, the forthcoming opening of Terminal 2 which will cater for domestic flights, the demolition and new construction of an arrivals terminal and the unfolding Project Greenfield under which a second runway and a new mega terminal will be constructed.

Rwanda too is putting final touches on the construction of a new airport in Bugesera, over and above the just concluded major terminal expansion of Kigali International Airport.
