The Tanzanian Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism Hamisi Kigwangalla, last week reportedly sacked the entire board of directors of the Tanzania Tourism Board over lack of performance and for failing to have the organization meet a range of targets set by the Ministry and government at large.
In the same breath did the Minister also warn the TTB management to either shape up and begin to perform to his expectations or else also face the sack, giving them a three months ultimatum.
It is understood that the Minister referred to the various missed goals in regard directives he issued a year ago and most of which in his opinion were not accomplished.
Tourism in Tanzania has been a major source of employment and foreign exchange earnings in the past but has been affected by fee, rate and tax increased heaped upon the sector, often with little notice and often amid massive disputes with the private sector over the past couple of years, capping what could otherwise have been a much steeper rise in tourist arrival numbers.
