Uganda government finally acts as concerts and public rallies prohibited over Ebola concerns

The end to mixed signals and economic interests  has finally come in Uganda as the government has banned all sorts of concerts and public rallies.

Up to a week ago did some individuals driven by self interests go as far as denying there were any cases of Ebola in Uganda, lies which now stand exposed and raise the question of borderline criminal negligence.

The measures were announced in a circular that the Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary, Dr. Diana Atwiine has sent to all Ministries, Departments and Agencies, Local Governments, Cultural and Religious Institutions, Development Partners, Civil Society Organizations, private sector entities, event organizers and the general public.

Mrs. Atwiine said that the measures now taken are intended to reduce opportunities for person-to-person contact which could increase the risk of transmission of Ebola infectionl.

The measures include a total ban on all music concerts and entertainment shows; cultural festivals, celebrations and commemorative events; public rallies and political mobilization gatherings, marathons, road races, walkathons, football and other sports matches and similar activities that involve prolonged physical exertion, increased sweating and close crowd interaction.

The measures now in place also include social, market and commercial activities likely to attract uncontrolled crowds; community celebrations and public recreational events; and any other non-essential gathering where effective Infection prevention and control measures cannot be guaranteed

Government security agencies have been directed to strictly enforce these measures and – adds ATCNews, should rather err on the side of caution than let things go on.
