The patient admitted to a hospital in Wajir county with suspected haemmorrhagic fever has told authorities that he had been in Congo DR, where an Ebola outbreak had turned rampant over the past few months.
The young man reportedly travelled from Eastern Congo via Uganda to Kenya as a so called turn boy, i.e. a helper on a long distance truck. He was taken ill already, according to his statement made in Kenya, in Uganda where he was given antibiotics before he was taken to hospital after reaching home. It appears he travelled for several days from Malaba via Nairobi and Isiolo to eventually reach Wajir county.
Blood samples have been sent to the government laboratory in Nairobi for urgent analysis to establish the underlying facts.
Efforts are reportedly also underway in both Kenya and Uganda to trace any contact persons, as has been the case with the initial first Ebola case in Nairobi.
