Work at the ferry port in Victoria gets underway for improved passenger facilities

MAJOR IMPROVEMENTS COMING UP FOR THE INTER ISLAND FERRY PORT

(Posted 26th February 2015)

The main ferry port in Victoria, Seychelles charming capital city, is the primary jump off point for tourists travelling from the main island of Mahe to Praslin and on to La Digue, the archipelago’s second and third largest islands.

Everyone visiting the fabled Valle de Mai, where the Coco de Mer is found growing in a tropical rainforest turned national park and UNESCO World Heritage Site, will pass through the port, unless they opt for the flying option on one of Air Seychelles nearly two dozen daily scheduled flights to Praslin.

Come rain or shine, passengers until now had to brace for either the rain or intense sunshine, the second preferable to the first of course.

Since the introduction of larger ferries and amid rising passenger numbers had the Seychelles Port Authority been under growing pressure to improve facilities at the quay. Reviews of passenger comments with often stinging remarks by locals regularly using the ferry, have finally led to the start of construction of new shelters and walk ways and the main body of work is due to be completed by the end of the year. The news will come as a great relief to the 800.000 ferry users per year, locals and tourists alike, who can now look forward to a sheltered waiting area, rest rooms, luggage stores as well as a new ticketing office – the present one can be quite chaotic during peak travel times – and facilities for the DMC’s who drop off and collect their guests for the trip to Praslin, or further on to La Digue.

While construction is ongoing will access for vehicles, parking and passenger boarding and de-boarding points have to be adjusted from time to time to ensure the safety of ferry users but DMC personnel will be aware of such changes avoiding inconvenience to tourists.
