UGANDA’S ‘GORILLA HIGHLANDS‘ – A DESTINATION WITHIN THE DESTINATION

Miha Logar’s ‘Gorilla Highlands‘ initiative, aimed to promote the South West of Uganda and the adjoining part of Rwanda across the border as a stand alone destination within East Africa, has reached out to the travel trade by offering a boot camp for those interested to learn more about the region, its many attractions and the latest additions in regard of hiking and biking trails, new accommodation facilities and the great variety of community based tourism activities now in place.
The Gorilla Highlands (www.gorillahighlands.com/initiative; GH) bootcamp is intended to prepare and motivate the team that is expected to take Gorilla Highlands to the next level. It was originally envisaged as a team-building exercise for MYL Holdings, the GH agents in Kigali, but Miha finally decided to open it up to other multimedia/marketing people interested in the Gorilla Highlands concept to have a wider audience. Whoever wishes to join, places are running out fast however, should send an email to miha@edirisa.org by return.
The bootcamp will take place at Edirisa on Lake Bunyonyi (www.edirisa.org/ourbase) from Saturday 19th of November to (at least) Wednesday 23th of November and Edirisa will sponsor dormitory-style accommodation, simple meals and all activities.
The plan is to prepare for a:
- General GH marketing plan (based on the already-existing Digital Media Plan that will be emailed to all participants)
- Social media strategy and calendar
- Everything needed for (bi)monthly GH talkshows in Kigali
- Stories for the GH blog and ‘friendly‘ media outlets
GH’s leadership wants to give in-depth coverage to the following GH projects:
- Video Map
- Pocket Guide
- Interactive eBook
- Regional booking system for Rwanda and Uganda
But, above all does GH want to expose everyone participating in this trip, aka bootcamp, to the Gorilla Highlands, the various trails and the system of guided trips put in place over the past years.
Tentative program:
Sat 19th November:
arrival at Edirisa before 1pm
motorboat trip and campfire together with the SafeMotos team (about 30 of them will be around over the weekend)
Sun 20th November:
participation at the Culture on the Crest/Touch of Bunyonyi trip for Matoke Tours (see “Bunyonyi Activities” at the bottom of www.gorillahighlands.com/lake-bunyonyi) or the SafeMotos climb to Arcadia Cottages
island overnight at Tom’s Homestay
Mon 21st November:
morning: group sessions
afternoon: individual work
Tue 22nd November:
participation at Batwa Today for Matoke Tours (see “Activities around Bunyonyi” at the bottom of www.gorillahighlands.com/lake-bunyonyi)
Wed 23th November:
morning: group sessions
afternoon: individual work
The stay can be extended past Wednesday with prior arrangements.

This is really a great initiative for promoting local tourism in the highlands, breaking the monotony of just gorilla tracking. Keep the candle burning.
