Mount Kenya Fires |
WHAT’S GOING ON? Teams from Mount Kenya Trust, Rhino Ark, the Kenya Wildlife Service, the Kenya Forest Service and the communities adjacent to the fires have been battling fires in the northern Aberdares and on Mount Kenya since the begging of February. An incredible job has been done of keeping the fires under control. MKT and Rhino Ark trained 60 rangers at the end of 2019 and it has paid off hugely. For 6 days we have had three separate fires that have dogged the teams – one huge one at Mbaru crater was controlled in two days. One in the Sirimon area that was controlled is now is very dangerously out of control, having flared up from underground. The daily temperatures and wind speeds have been increasing steadily and there is no sign of rain at all. Yesterday we made the difficult but correct decision to launch helicopters to support the ground teams with water bombing. Tropic Air ran two choppers for 3 hours each this morning but we are still battling. We have sent the choppers back in to drop on a major flare up and the bills are mounting. Tropic Air have donated an hour and are charging the conservation rates for the other hours but choppers are choppers and the cost of flying them is high. We have had some very generous donations to date, thank you so much to those who have helped so far. We are now appealing to others to help out any way they can. |
