KENYA AIRWAYS MAINTAINS CAIRO SCHEDULE
The Kenyan national airline has throughout the political crisis in Egypt maintained their flights between Nairobi to Cairo, which operate daily via Khartoum. While Egypt Air, also flying daily to Nairobi, has been scaling back their operations, especially while an extensive curfew was in place in Cairo, it subsequently has rebooked some of their passengers destined for Kenya on to KQ.
A source in Nairobi however conceded that passenger number had significantly declined on the route, as did cargo carried on the flights, in view of curfew restrictions which made it impossible for passengers to reach the airport during those times, but also as a result of the often violent scenes shown on global television news channels, which deterred potential travellers. Anti travel advisories and emergency evacuations of tourists and expatriates from Egypt too contributed to the initial outbound boom but brought inbound traffic to Egypt to a literal halt.
Still, Kenya Airways maintains that traffic will soon pick up again as stability, peace and quiet return to Egypt’s cities and streets and people return to work, while Egypt’s tourism sector is reportedly already working on a massive publicity campaign, combined with extra special low priced offers, to lure tourists back to the Red Sea resorts, visits to the pyramids and of course the Nile cruises to the temples and monuments in Luxor and other upcountry destinations along the Nile.
