Radar failure at Nairobi’s JKIA impacts on flight operations

RADAR FAILURE AT JKIA CAUSES DELAYS

(Posted 25th August 2017)

East Africa’s main aviation hub, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, yesterday experienced a radar installation failure, leading to delays in arrivals and departures of many flights.
While the Kenya Airport Authority did not find the event alarming enough to issue a formal statement through their social media outlets have those affected taken their anger into the public domain:

You guys you are sleeping at work…something has to be done. Very embarrassing in the eye of visitors and tourist visiting kenya

Junior Kim An airport of your magnitude and World Rank should have emergency and alternative options. Nothing should stand still or hugely affected due to the main control system’s failure.

while Kenyan media celebrity Larry Madovo then added his own take when he tweeted:

Elevators have been out of service for months at JKIA Terminal 1B. Embarrassing. What gives, @KenyaAirports @Jonny_Andersen?

Needless to say did neither KAA nor their CEO Jonny Anderson find it necessary to respond to Larry as of the time of publishing this report.

Said Kenya Airways in a brief statement issued late last night: ‘Earlier in the day we experienced failure of the air traffic control radar system which has now been restored. As a result we are experiencing delays in and out of Nairobi, JKIA. Kenya Airways remains committed to the safe transportation of our guests. We apologize for any inconvenience to our guests and thank you for your patience and understanding‘.

While flights into and out of JKIA have since returned to normality has the impact caused by the equipment failure led to some subsequent delays which are expected to be overcome however during the cause of the day.
