EUROPE COMMEMORATES THE GUNS FALLING SILENT 100 YEARS AGO AS AFRICA’S TURN STILL TWO WEEKS AWAY

This weekend marks 100 years since the guns fell silent in Europe after the ‘armistice’ of truce was signed ending the First World War.

In Africa, however, this still took a two further weeks till the German Schutztruppe led by General von Lettow Vorbeck finally laid down their arms in Mbala in Northern Zambia on the 25th November 1918.

Tomorrow there will be Services of Remembrance taking place across the world at 11 am to remember everyone, of all races, creeds, and ethnicity who played a role, at home and abroad, in the Great War of 1914-1918 and all subsequent wars.

In Kenya, there will be Services of Remembrance held at the CWGC Cemeteries at Ngong, Mbaraki, Nanyuki, and Gilgil. Relevant authorities in Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi did not revert about commemorations held there, as these former colonies and protectorates too were involved in the war effort a century ago.

If you can’t make a service, please stop what you’re doing at 11 am for 2 minutes and remember all those who have passed on while serving their country.

The small museum at Sarova Taita Hills Lodge is showcasing events and locations for visitors to the Taita / Taveta area. The beautiful model portraying Mashoti Fort arrived just in time thanks to the teams at Kesom Freight International and Fargo Couriers.

Special thanks however must go to Mr. Willie Mwadilo, General Manager of the Sarova Taita Hills and the Sarova Salt Lick lodges, and his amazing team. Through their enthusiasm, support, and encouragement of this tiny Chapter of Kenya’s vibrant history and culture has been given another voice, filled by many exhibits collected from the battlefields of a hundred years ago.
Also mentioned must be Mr. William Kimani, one of Willie’s staff at the lodge and his maintenance crew. From rolls of PVC and Canvas, they worked tirelessly to produce all the woodwork, hang all the panels and ensure the lighting is perfect.
