Sauti Za Busara – already taking aim at 2015

Zanzibar based Sauti Za Busara, arguably Africa’s greatest cultural festival, has now invited expressions of interest for artists and films for the 2015 event, which will take place from February 12th to 15th.

After a hugely successful 2014 edition, which cemented SZB’s premier position as THE platform for African artists and film makers to showcase their creations is the next year’s festival expected to do even better, attracting year after year Africa’s leading performers.

And so the sun goes down on another epic Sauti za Busara festival! For the four days of 13 – 16 February Stone Town’s heart beat to a different drum. The Old Fort reverberated to the sounds of 32 bands from all over the continent – from Taarab to sega blues to African trance to live electronica to high life to spirit dance. Kora maestros featured strongly on the programme, including Noumoucounda Cissoko from Senegal, and a rare female kora player, the sublime Sona Jobarteh from Gambia. Have you always wanted to perform in Zanzibar?Applications are now open for the 12th edition of Sauti za Busara. This is your chance to apply for a spot to perform at the 2015 festival. Our focus has always been on bringing you African music under African skies – this year in addition to the African Continent and its diaspora

Sauti za Busara also welcomes applications from the Gulf States including Oman, Yemen, Iran, as well as from the Indian Ocean region.

All artists have to complete the online application and send recordings to reach our office before 31 July 2014. The festival selection committee meets in August and all applicants are notified of outcomes by email during September…more

Call for Films 2015 – Deadline 30 November 2014Sauti za Busara is looking for a variety of feature length and short films about music. These can be music clips or videos, music documentaries, or recorded concerts from around Africa.

  • Films that tell a story about music or musicians from Africa.
  • Films with great visuals, quality sound, and music firmly rooted in African culture.
  • Foreign language films should come with English /Kiswahili sub-titles.

Your application can only be considered if we receive a completed application including two DVDs of the film before 30 November 2014.

Bi Kidude
Bi Kidude was a favourite at Sauti za Busara, being the only artist to have performed eight times at the festival. This year was the first festival since her passing on April 17, 2013,and she was deeply missed. Busara Promotions’ Board of Trustees went onto stage to pay tribute to her, ahead of Tausi Women’s Taarab group, with whom she used to perform. Journalist, writer and board member,
